Jason Terry is the biggest problem the Mavericks have and until his minutes are limited this team will still have the same glaring weaknesses and early playoff exits
This may sound crazy to anyone who doesn't understand the gray area of the game of basketball.
This may sound crazy to anyone who doesn't understand the gray area of the game of basketball.
This may sound crazy to anyone who doesn't understand the gray area (the little things) of the game of basketball.
Anyone who is a victim of the fantasy sports-era we live in and only looks in the box score to judge the production of a basketball player by looking at major stat categories (points, rebounds, assists) will think I am crazy for saying this, but keep reading and maybe I can change your mind.
Terry is one of the most beloved Mavericks in the city especially by the local media because of his openness and ability to provide useful quotations, which is why people in the media look the other way when analyzing the glaring weakness of this team.
Just think about it.
In recent years what have been the two biggest knocks on the Mavericks as a basketball team?
1.) They are a jump shooting team
2.) They cannot guard guards and get stops late in games
Terry is a jumpshooting guard who is a HUGE, HUGE liability on defense.
He is the prototype to the Mavs’ weaknesses.
He is too slow to guard point guards, arguably too slow to guard shooting guards and definitely not physical enough to guard shooting guards or small forwards.
He simply can’t guard his position, which forces the Mavericks to either allow opposing guards to go crazy and hope Terry outscores them or puts the Mavs in a position where someone else has to guard someone outside their comfort zone.
See: Dwyane Wade in 2006, the entire Warriors backcourt in 2007 and most recently George Hill for San Antonio.
I have been saying this for years, I understand what Terry does for this team, and it is an undisputed fact he is one of the best bench scorers in the Association.
However, any team that has Jason Terry playing in the majority of games is going to have weaknesses that arguably outweigh what he brings to the table as a basketball player.
